What Is a Surgical Excision?

A surgical excision is a minor, in-office surgical procedure used to completely remove skin lesions that require deeper tissue clearance. It involves carefully cutting around and beneath a lesion to ensure full removal — often used for suspicious moles, confirmed skin cancers, cysts, or other growths that need a more definitive approach.

At On the Spot Dermatology, our skilled providers use advanced technique and aesthetic sensitivity to ensure both medical effectiveness and the best possible cosmetic outcome.

Surgical Excisions FAQ

What Does It Treat?
  • Skin cancers (e.g., basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma)
  • Dysplastic or atypical moles
  • Benign growths (when full removal is preferred)
  • Cysts
  • Lipomas (select types)
  • Lesions that have changed in size, shape, or color
What to Expect During Treatment
  • Consultation & Planning – Your provider will evaluate the area, review your diagnosis or concern, and explain the excision process.
  • Local Anesthetic – The area is numbed to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
  • Excision – Using a scalpel, the lesion and a small margin of surrounding tissue are removed.
  • Closure – The wound is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing.
  • Pathology – The excised tissue is sent to a lab to confirm diagnosis and ensure clear margins (if applicable).

Most procedures take 20–40 minutes and are performed right in our Glenview office.

Aftercare & Recovery
  • Keep the area clean and covered as instructed.
  • Sutures are typically removed in 7–14 days, depending on the site and tension.
  • Mild soreness, swelling, or bruising may occur for a few days.
  • A scar will form, which typically fades over time — we’ll guide you on proper scar care.

We’ll schedule follow-up appointments as needed and keep you informed every step of the way.

Is It Right for Me?

If you’ve been diagnosed with a skin cancer, have a mole or lesion that’s changed, or simply want something removed for peace of mind, a surgical excision is a safe, definitive treatment option. It allows for full evaluation of the tissue and, when necessary, curative removal.
