What Is a Shave Biopsy?
A shave biopsy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure used to remove and evaluate superficial skin lesions. Using a sterile blade, a thin layer of skin is shaved off for diagnostic testing. This allows our dermatology team to examine the tissue under a microscope and determine whether it is benign, pre-cancerous, or cancerous.
It’s one of the most common diagnostic tools in dermatology — safe, efficient, and performed right here in our office with little to no downtime.

What Does It Treat?
- Suspicious moles or growths

- Squamous cell carcinoma

What to Expect During Treatment
- Evaluation – Your provider will examine the lesion and explain why a biopsy is recommended.
- Local Anesthetic – The area is numbed to ensure comfort.
- Shaving the Lesion – A small blade is used to carefully shave off the top layers of the lesion.
- Sample Sent to Lab – The tissue is sent for pathology review to determine a diagnosis.
The entire process typically takes under 15 minutes, and patients are able to return to daily activities immediately.
Aftercare & Recovery
- A small bandage will cover the site; you’ll be given detailed instructions on how to care for it.
- Mild redness or scabbing is normal and should heal within 1–2 weeks.
- Avoid sun exposure on the area until fully healed.
Results are typically available within 1–2 weeks, and we will follow up with a clear explanation of your results and next steps if needed.
